Going from Island to Island to End The War The attack on Pearl Harbor was a surprise attack, it was in December 7, 1941. There were hundreds of Japanese fighter planes and started to attack about 8 a.m. and they destroyed about 20 American naval vessels, including eight enormous battleships, and more than 300 airplanes. It was devastating, more than 2,000 Americans soldiers and sailors died in the attack, and another 1,000 were wounded. That was the reason why the U.S. got involved in the war.

The Battle of Midway was such an important event in history. It is important because it was an amazing victory for the U.S. against the Japanese. The battle was on air and sea, the U.S. lost 307 soldiers and Japan lost more than 2,500 soldiers. It was the greatest Naval battle. When Pearl Harbor was invaded not all of the naval fleet was present. Thanks to code breakers the U.S. found out about Japans plan to attack another island, but The U.S. fleet counterattacked them. It was a major turning point of the the Pacific War. Japan lost four carriers, a cruiser, and 292 aircraft, and suffered 2,500 casualties and the U.S. lost the Yorktown, the destroyer USS Hammann, 145 aircraft, and suffered 307. Japan lost badly.
The "Island Hopping Strategy" was used in the Pacific War. The U.S. was going to invade Japan because of what happened at Pear Harbor. The reason the U.S. used this strategy was because the planes couldn't fly far distances because they were too heavy. The U.S. was going island to island and getting closer to Japan, and also trying to defeat Japanese forces on the way.

The Manhattan Project was a project in witch the U.S. built two atomic bombs. The Manhattan Project began when Albert Einstein wrote a letter to President Roosevelt about how Germany was starting to figure out how to use nuclear power. It was a big concern because if Hitler would have built an atomic bomb a lot of lives were at risk or maybe the whole world was at risk. When we finished the two bombs President Roosevelt died. In 1945 the U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on Hiroshima and three days later another bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. There were a lot of deaths, about 146,000 people died in Hiroshima and about 80,000 died in Nagasaki some from the radiation and others from direct contact.
